In the late 1960s and early 1970s, nearly 100 deer were translocated over several years to other areas in Finland in an attempt to expand the population. Some of these were successful, including those near the eastern border with Russian (Kairikko and Ruola, 2005). During this effort, 10 whitetails were also translocated to Russia and split between the Moscow Zoo and other locations. Some of these may have gone to the Zavidovo wildlife management area 100 km northwest of Moscow (K. Nygren, Game and Fisheries Research Institute—Finland, personal communication).
