Smectic liquid crystals are named for the Greek word for soup. In these crystals, the molecules are in layers, one on top of the other, with their molecules aligned perpendicularly to the plane. Two adjacent layers can laterally slide over each other. In cholesteric liquid crystals, the molecules are also arranged in layers as in smectic liquid crystals, except that the molecules are oriented along the planes and not in a perpendicular direction as in smectic crystals. In these cholesteric crystals, the orientation of molecules changes slowly from one plane to the next, forming a helical pattern, resembling a screw.
